Pathways Writing Classes (Grades 4–9)

A structured writing class that teaches students how to write before expecting creativity.

Students learn a repeatable system for organizing ideas, building paragraphs, and writing essays — skills they can use in every subjects.

Many students struggle with writing because they don’t know where to start.

This method removes that frustration by teaching structure first, then adding style and independence.

What Your Student Will Learn

Students are guided step-by-step through key writing skills, building confidence and independence along the way.

Students practice major composition types:

  • note taking and outlines

  • paragraphs and summaries

  • stories and narratives

  • reports and research papers

  • essays

  • literary responses

  • critiques

Students also develop style gradually:

  • strong verbs

  • descriptive vocabulary

  • varied sentence openers

  • sentence variety

These skills create a strong foundation for high school writing and beyond.

Grammar Instruction

Students practice grammar through guided editing and direct application to their own writing.

In some years, students use IEW's Fix It! Grammar approach, editing real passages and applying corrections in context.

In alternate years, grammar instruction is integrated through the IEW writing curriculum, along with additional teacher-provided materials that focus on strengthening everyday writing skills in context.

The Editor Requirement (Important)

Each student needs an editor who reviews assignments before submission.

The editor may be:
• a parent
• older sibling
• tutor (referral list available)

The editor does NOT teach the lesson.
They simply mark errors so the student can make corrections independently.

This step is essential to the method and helps students make steady, consistent progress.
