Pathways Writing
A clear path to strong writing for students in grades 4–9.
Instruction is based on the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) methodology and is led by a certified instructor. Students learn to organize ideas, build strong paragraphs, and develop clear, effective writing skills they can apply across subjects.
IEW Writing Classes (Grades 4–9)
A structured writing class that teaches students how to write before expecting creativity.
Students learn a repeatable system for organizing ideas, building paragraphs, and writing essays — skills they can use in every subjects.
Many students struggle with writing because they don’t know where to start.
This method removes that frustration by teaching structure first, then adding style and independence.
What Students Learn
Students practice all major composition types:
• note taking & outlines
• paragraphs & summaries
• stories & narratives
• reports & research papers
• essays
• response to literature
• critiques
They also improve style gradually:
• strong verbs
• descriptive vocabulary
• varied sentence openers
• sentence variety
Grammar Instruction
Odd Years (ie. 2025-2026)
Students edit real passages using Fix It! Grammar and apply corrections directly to their own writing.
This helps grammar improve everyday writing — not just worksheets.
Even Years (ie. 2026-2027)
Students also use Grammar (specifics coming soon).
The Editor Requirement (Important)
Each student must have an editor who reviews assignments before submission.
The editor may be:
• a parent
• older sibling
• tutor (referral list available)
The editor does NOT teach the lesson.
They simply mark errors so the student can make corrections.
This step is essential to the method and one of the main reasons students make consistent progress.
